Encouraged by my relatively recent discovery of Conlon Nancarrow’s music, I’ve been writing these studies for MIDI piano. Each study is generated from one (!) ‘melody’, using transposition and canonic displacement, allowing me to experiment with concepts ranging from polytonality to rhythmic frameworks. Each study is unique in its machinery and color. Essentially what you’re hearing is one big canon with certain voices transposed. The resulting body of work contains 20 studies - it’s my first (and certainly not last) full release of purely classical music (although I don’t like genre labels). “MIDI Studies” is out now on DecodeTheseNotes.
